This is the initial project of the 2020 Infinite Off-Season initiatives completed here at Spartronics. A gearbox for a dual Falcon 500 Drivetrain has been finished. This season, we ended up filling our quota and that got me thinking, can a dual motor drivetrain be viable? The answer turns out to be yes if you use Falcon 500s because they have roughly double the torque of a CIM. The advantages of this drivetrain model are numerous. Firstly, it is lightweight: This gearbox with the motor weighs a hair under 2.7lbs, making it an ideal choice for teams looking to minimize weight. Secondly, it is compact: When you have fewer motors, you take up less room and this gearbox is designed to have the chain run inside one of the chassis tubes and the motor is flipped over top, taking up even less space. Additionally, this drivetrain model requires fewer PDP Slots. However, there are also some drawbacks. Firstly, it has less power: I would imagine most teams will be using quad Falcon 500 or sextuplet NEO drivetrains, which have more power and speed. Secondly, it lacks redundancy: If one of your drivetrain motors fails in a match, you can spin but do pretty much nothing else.
