The Minoan civilization was a highly developed Aegean Bronze Age society that flourished on the island of Crete and other Aegean islands, such as Santorini, from approximately 3650 to 1400 BC. Rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th century through the groundbreaking work of British archaeologist Arthur Evans, this civilization has been hailed by renowned historian Will Durant as "the first link in the European chain." Recent discoveries indicate that early human presence on the island of Crete dates back as far as 130,000 years ago, with evidence suggesting that either prehuman hominins or early modern humans inhabited the area. However, the earliest confirmed signs of anatomically modern humans did not appear until around 10,000 to 12,000 years ago. It was not until the Neolithic period in 5000 BC that the first indications of advanced agriculture emerged in the Aegean, marking a pivotal moment in the development of civilization.
