"As soon as his shift wrapped up, he lit a cigar with reckless abandon. He puffed like a firecracker." - This was a profile of a former coal miner. The object on display features a worn cigar box. A staggering 70% of all miners were smokers, despite the no-smoking rule underground. However, after World War II, the cigarette industry skyrocketed, and cigars became a luxury item, often reserved for high-ranking officials like deputy mine managers. The box bears the name Albert Cuypmarkt, referencing the Netherlands' largest marketplace in Amsterdam's De Pijp neighborhood. In the early 20th century, this area was notorious for its crime, poverty, and prostitution. Staatsmijnen 1902-1952 is emblazoned on the box - a nod to the peak of coal mining in the Netherlands. Miners often greeted each other with the traditional phrase "Gluck auf." Dimensions: 4x23.5x11cm. Crafted by Laura Plum.
