Miniature Figures Storage Tray for 25mm Bases
thingiverse
I remixed an accredited file originally designed for paint pots to create storage solutions for my growing 28mm mini figure collection. I've experimented with magnetic trays, homemade foam systems, and commercial options, but each has its own drawbacks and significant costs. On September 24, 2018, I uploaded a smaller tray STL to fit printers with smaller beds; it measures less than 180mm in length and width, and is titled Tray X36 since it holds 36 figures per half-tray. I searched Thingiverse but couldn't find a suitable design until I saw the base paint pot file. I planned to attach these trays to a hardboard sheet from a dollar store clipboard, which measures 12 inches by 9 inches, to fit inside a Sterilite 15 qt./14 litre snap-lid container. I reduced the height to 8mm and created sheets with six rows of eight 27.25mm recesses, oversizing them for overhanging flocking. After printing several sheets, I found some figures didn't fit easily due to excessive flocking, so I created a second sheet with 29mm wide recesses. I recommend trying the 27mm sheet first and if any figures don't fit, use the 29mm sheet. Two trays per clipboard sheet hold 48 figures each, allowing you to store 96 figures per layer. I place a 1-inch soft foam sheet between each row. Two rows per container work well; however, avoid oversized containers as they become heavy, especially with metal figures like mine. I epoxied the two trays together and ensured they were flat and centered on the hardboard. The figures are slightly loose but secure in their designated spaces. This setup allows you to scan your minis for specific selection when building army lists.
