To gauge the speed of my nearby carpet and golf greens, I decided to build a stimpmeter, a miniature version scaled down from the standard 36-inch official stimp device. A stimpmeter measures green speeds by rolling a ball down a 36-inch ramp at a precise 20-degree angle. The distance the ball travels after leaving the ramp is equivalent to its Stimp speed. By averaging six or more rolls across different areas of the green, you can determine its Stimp Speed. Typically, most golf courses range from six to eleven on the Stimp scale, while tournament courses usually fall between nine and fourteen. I designed this stimpmeter primarily to compare the speed of my home carpet and putting surfaces with that of my local course.
