All gas turbines, also known as jet engines, operate on the same fundamental principle. At the front, a fan sucks in air, while a compressor raises its pressure. The compressor is comprised of numerous blades attached to a shaft that spins at extremely high velocities, compressing or squeezing the air. The compressed air is then mixed with fuel and ignited by an electric spark. The burning gases expand rapidly and blast out through the nozzle at the back of the engine. As the jets of gas shoot backward, they propel the engine and aircraft forward with tremendous force. Meanwhile, the hot air passes through another group of blades called the turbine as it makes its way to the nozzle. The turbine is attached to the same shaft as the compressor, and spinning the turbine causes the compressor to spin as well.
