Fill a 5-liter water bottle with distilled or tap water. Plug in an aquarium air pump rated at 2 watts; this is sufficient power. Alternatively, use a low-wattage water pump equipped with a flow regulator. Next, insert a handful of clay balls into the water, followed by fertilized liquid found in any local garden supply store. The system is automated and does not require surveillance beyond monitoring the fertilized liquid, which needs to be changed weekly. For optimal conditions, wrap dark bands around the bottle to minimize exposure to light. Secure the clay balls with tape. Include a note that PLA (polylactic acid) can dissolve in water over time. You can add an inexpensive desk lamp to supplement natural lighting during winter months. To simplify draining and cleaning tasks, program a pump or use an automatic timer to reduce frequency of maintenance activities.
