Mini 0805/0803/0801 Dash Cam to Selens 36mm CPL Adapter ring
thingiverse
This is an adapter ring that lets you attach a Selens 36mm CPL to an Ambarella Mini 0805/0803/0801 dash camera. To do this, you'll need: * A printed adapter plate (I printed mine at 98% size on the STL file above and it fit perfectly) - print in ABS! * An Ambarella mini 0805/3/1 dash camera * Magnetic tape or double-sided tape (I used 3M double-sided foam tape, which worked great - I also bought adhesive-backed magnetic tape but didn't like its strength) Print Settings: * Printer Brand: FlashForge * Printer Model: Creator Pro * Rafts: Yes * Supports: No * Resolution: 0.2mm z-axis * Infill: 30% (or lower) Notes: I printed at 98% size for a perfect fit using Simplify3D. A raft is necessary because ABS warps when removed from the hotplate (this wouldn't be an issue if you use tape or another contact medium and let it cool). Post-Printing: Installation: The threading on the adapter ring matches the lens, but it's slightly mismatched. This makes it easy to get the thread stuck, but securing it as far in as possible and rotating it slightly will engage the thread and give a firm hold. I considered changing the shape of the adapter ring and using a plug to secure it onto the camera held by the audio jack on top, but I wanted something sturdier. Food for thought for others! As an afterthought, I colored in the adapter plate black with a Sharpie once it was secured. This was just because white stood out against the black camera and lens when I printed in white ABS. From outside my car, I couldn't tell the difference, but if you want full stealth, print in black. The lens can be removed for night driving by rotating it against the adapter ring. This pops the lens out, leaving the adapter plate attached but not obstructing. In my case, the adapter plate was permanently attached to the camera, but I could easily remove it with isopropyl alcohol and double-sided tape. After fitting the CPL, I removed it and the mount stayed firmly attached. I then colored the mount black again! How I Designed This Design Program and My Story: I used SolidWorks to design this part. If you have SolidWorks 2016-2017, feel free to download and modify the file, which is attached. My Story: I bought an Ambarella Mini 0805 Dash Camera for my car to install myself, but soon realized that the glare from the windshield and dash made it difficult to see number plates on the footage unless I was in shade or facing away from the sun. I discovered I needed a polarizing filter or CPL. I went onto eBay and found the Selens 36mm CPL lens designed for the Inspire X3 or Osmo X3 drones. This was the cheapest CPL I could find, at around $8 AUD / $6 US shipped from China to Australia for free. The Filter has a threaded rear component that allows it to be attached while a slip joint for polarization adjustments independent of the threaded section. But I had nothing and no way to mount it on the camera, so I decided to print an adapter plate. This gave the lens some surface area to attach to the camera. The Mount was designed with a thread incorporated into it as well as a flat back plate to stick it to the camera. The ridges on the edge of the model are for grip to allow for install or removal of the plate once fitted.
