Marble and bronze bust of helmeted Athena is now digitized with precision as the British Museum boasts. Culture/Period | Roman, Excavated/Findspot | Villa Casali Materials | Marble; Bronze, Technique | Inlaid Dimensions | Height: 68.58 centimeters, Department | Greek & Roman Antiquities The powerful goddess Minerva is the Roman deity of wisdom and supporter of arts, trade, and strategy. She was born with weapons from Jupiter's head after he swallowed the titaness Metis whole. Jupiter had recalled a prophecy that their child would overpower him, so he devoured her to prevent it. While inside the father-god, the titaness created arms and armor for her child, and Jupiter's constant pain made him split his own head open to relieve the suffering. Vulcan then used a hammer to split Jupiter's head, and Minerva emerged, whole, adult, and carrying her mother's weapons and armor. From the 2nd century BC onwards, the Romans equated her with the Greek goddess Athena. She was the virgin goddess of music, poetry, medicine, wisdom, commerce, weaving, crafts, and magic. The bronze helmet and drapery were made by sculptor Albacini copying a bust of Athena in the Vatican Museum. Cook 2013, nr. 244: Townley described; ‘A head of Minerva found 1783 in the Villa Casali amongst ruins believed to have belonged to the Baths of Olimpiodorus. Originally it had a helmet of bronze with fastenings still apparent’ (TY 12/3, park drawing room 6). Please email us at social@studiox.space if you have any questions about the piece or the 3D model.
