Pickaxes, also called picks, are the most commonly used tool in Minecraft for mining stone and ores, and breaking objects like furnaces, anvils, and iron bars. Players usually create their first tool by combining two sticks with three units of a selected material. Pickaxes come in various types such as wooden, stone, iron, diamond, and golden, each with different durability levels. Iron and diamond pickaxes are required to mine gold ore successfully, while other pickaxes can mine stone instantly. Different pickaxes also mine materials at varying speeds. When used as a weapon, pickaxes cause stronger attacks but consume two durability points. Pickaxes can be found in bonus chests, stronghold altar and storeroom chests, village blacksmith chests, abandoned mineshaft chest minecarts, End city chests, and tool smith villagers' trades at varying rates. Enchanted iron and diamond pickaxes are also available for purchase from third-tier trades of tool smith villagers.
