Here is the text with slight variations of language: I originally set out to build a standalone DVD player, but hit a roadblock sourcing the perfect component - an tray-less DVD drive. Luckily, I found one, but it draws far too much power for the Raspberry Pi. A more straightforward solution was to design a desktop DVD drive that plugs right into my computer. If I were still working in IT, I'd have this on my desk at work for sure. In addition to its function as a DVD player, I rigged up some TIP31 transistors and LEDs to give it an old-fashioned valve radio feel. It looked super cool, and worked amazingly well too. More of those tray-less drives are due in soon, so I can finally complete this standalone player when they arrive. I've also included the SketchUp file for the top panel - your drive may differ, after all - making edits easier than it otherwise would have been. When instructions get written up, you'll be able to dive into this DIY project like I did and build a great-sounding jukebox that's also fun to play with.
