Sometimes, a beholder’s sense of self is stronger than a tadpole’s ability to finish the process of ceremorphosis, so that the beholder’s body changes, but it’s mind remains outside mind flayers’ colony and elder brain’s influence. Such abominations are fortunately rare, but not unheard of. They tend to from huge outlaw empires in the Underdark or on other planes of existence, combining magic with the powers of the mind. Mind Tyrants frequently graft onto themselves symbionts or body parts harvested from unfortunate victims, such as arms and hands with opposable thumbs, that are of huge help to them when they create magic or alchemical items or when they operate on captives in order to create new monstrous slaves for their armies.
