During World War II, Navy divers used this open-bottom helmet to make repairs on ships and equipment in water less than 60 feet deep. Compared to closed systems like the Mark V, these helmets were light and easy to use due to their simple design. A surface pump pushed air into the helmet while weights attached to its base kept it firmly on the diver's head. The introduction of SCUBA gear after the war reduced the popularity of open helmets. SCUBA simplified shallow-water diving by eliminating the need for helmets, air hoses, and surface air pumps required by open-helmet systems. Location - United States Naval Undersea Museum, Keyport, Washington.
