Several ancient rituals aimed at preserving human spiritual purity can be found within Jewish culture and religion, with one notable example being the practice of spiritual bathing, known as mikvot. A centuries-old ritual bath complex built from these mikvot exists on Mount Zion in Jerusalem, part of a larger excavation project located near the Old City. As one of the world's oldest cities of significant religious importance, Jerusalem boasts numerous archaeological sites linked to biblical antiquity. Despite over two centuries of extensive archaeological research within this region, no comprehensive study has ever been conducted regarding the mikvot. Our team is now undertaking this crucial task and rectifying a significant omission in existing knowledge. In collaboration with the German Protestant Institute of Archeology and FH Potsdam, we have carried out an exhaustive examination of the architectural components of these ritual baths. The restoration project involving these baths will commence in May 2019, as part of a concerted effort by Aphva International e.V. and its members to tackle this ambitious challenge!
