The Mikoyan MiG-29 is a twin-engine, variable-sweep wing air superiority fighter designed by Soviet designer Mikhail Leontyevich Gurevich's OKB-1 in the late 1970s. Developed during a time of great tension between the United States and the Soviet Union, this aircraft was meant to counter the U.S. Air Force's McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle. The MiG-29 is powered by two Saturn R-33 turbofan engines, each producing 8,100 pounds-force (36 kN) of thrust. These high-bypass engines provide a significant increase in power and efficiency compared to earlier Soviet fighter designs. The aircraft has a length of 18.4 meters (60 ft), a wingspan of 11.3 meters (37 ft), and a height of 4.7 meters (15 ft). Its empty weight is around 9,700 kilograms (21,400 lb), with a maximum takeoff weight of approximately 17,600 kilograms (38,800 lb). The MiG-29 features an advanced fly-by-wire flight control system, which allows for improved handling and stability. It also has a sophisticated radar system, the NIIP N001, capable of tracking multiple targets simultaneously. The aircraft's armament consists of one 30mm Gryazev-Shipunov GSh-301 cannon with 150 rounds, as well as provision for up to six R-27 (AA-10 Alamo), two R-60 (AA-8 Aphid) and eight R-73 (AA-11 Archer) air-to-air missiles. The Mikoyan MiG-29 entered service with the Soviet Air Forces in 1983, and has since been exported to several countries.
