The MiG-105 was a vital component of the Soviet Spiral aerospace system, designed to test manned low-speed handling and landing capabilities. As part of a project aimed at creating an orbital spaceplane, it marked a significant achievement in response to the American Boeing X-20 Dyna-Soar military space initiative. The research was likely influenced by NASA's Flight Research Center in California, USA, which was conducting similar manned lifting body experiments. The MiG 105 earned its nickname "Lapot" or Russian "bast shoe," due to its distinctive nose shape, a colloquial term also used as slang for shoe.
