The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-105 emerged as part of the Spiral program, an ambitious Soviet project that focused on creating an orbital spaceplane. Its primary goal was to test and improve low-speed handling and landing techniques in a manned vehicle. Initially, the MiG 105 came about as a direct response to the American military space project known as the Boeing X-20 Dyna-Soar. This innovative space plane was heavily influenced by contemporary NASA research into manned lifting bodies conducted at its Flight Research Center in California, USA. The distinctive nose shape of the MiG 105 earned it a nickname, Lapot ( Russian for "bast shoe"), also slang for a particular type of shoe, giving it an unique identity in the world of space exploration.
