Templates that I use to craft Midori-style notebooks are carefully designed to accommodate A5 inserts, ensuring a snug fit even with multiple sections. To achieve this precise cut, the templates are expertly crafted from 3mm MDF, which provides a sturdy base for precision cutting. When creating large notebooks, the 350mm wide template proves to be an ideal choice, offering a seamless integration of inserts. Afterwards, I carefully trim the leather using these templates as guides and then drill precise holes with a 3mm drill bit to secure the elastic in place. Ideally, laser cutting would be the preferred method for such intricate designs; however, my current laser cutter is not capable of handling the larger templates required. To assemble the notebook, I fold the leather inserts and clamp them between sheets of mdf or plywood to maintain a tight seal. The 2mm elastic threads seamlessly through the drilled holes, securely holding the inner pages in place, while the 2.2mm elastic provides an equally secure binding along the outer edges. Finally, to complete the notebook's functionality, I repurpose a money clip and a leftover piece of leather to create a pen holder, adding a touch of elegance to this already refined design.
