Middleton High School Letterman Jacket Worn by Fred Hearns (On loan to The Florida Holocaust Museum from Fred Hearns) Digital exhibition “Beaches, Benches and Boycotts: The Civil Rights Movement in Tampa Bay” In the words of Fred Hearns: "I am a 1966 graduate of George S. Middleton High School in Tampa. I played bass clarinet in the marching and concert bands for three years there and was co-captain my senior year. In 1965 our band became the first black band to march in Tampa's annual Gasparilla Parade. I was also one of the first black students in 1965 allowed to visit the free public library on 7th Avenue and Tampa Street. Prior to that, blacks went to either the Harlem Branch Library on Central Avenue or the West Branch Library on Main Street. I graduated fourth in my high school class of 250 students."
