Burnt Mound at Mid Clyth in Caithness, Highland, Scotland Uncovered. A previously unknown burnt mound lies alongside a stream, where livestock erosion has revealed internal structures within the burnt mound consisting of walling and upright slabs. The mound measures 8 metres in diameter. Burnt mounds are typically dated to mid-late Bronze Age, defined as archaeological monuments consisting of a mound of burnt stone associated with a watertight trough or pit and a hearth. Excavated examples have shown that they can be complex structures. Many theories exist, but little solid evidence supports their use - cooking, sauna, tanning textile processing, brewing, possibly all of these.
