Michael I, born on October 25, 1921, ruled Romania as King from July 20, 1927, to June 8, 1930, and again from September 6, 1940, to December 30, 1947. In 1925, Michael's father, Prince Carol, gave up his claim to the throne and moved to Paris in exile. After his grandfather Ferdinand I's death in 1927, Michael took over the throne. However, in 1930, his father returned from exile and replaced him as king, dissolving the regency that had been ruling on his behalf. Carol II was ousted in 1940, and Michael regained the throne. In 1944, Michael participated in a coup against Ion Antonescu's military dictatorship and allied himself with the Allies. He was forced to abdicate in 1947 by the government controlled by Romania's Communist Party, which exiled him and revoked his citizenship a year later. Michael married Princess Anne of Bourbon-Parma in 1948 and had five daughters: Margareta, Elena, Irina, Sophie, and Maria. His citizenship was restored in 1997, and he currently resides in Romania. As the last surviving head of state from the Interwar period, Michael is also one of only three remaining heads of state from World War II, along with King Simeon II of Bulgaria and Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet.
