A fungus produces the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body known as a mushroom, typically above ground on soil or its food source. The cultivated white button mushroom, Agaricus bisporus, sets the standard for the name "mushroom"; hence, the word is most often used to describe those fungi (Basidiomycota, Agaricomycetes) with a stem, cap, and gills or pores on the underside of the cap.
