The German company Rheinmetall-Borsig AG designed the 7.9 mm MG 34 machine gun by order of the Wehrmacht. Led by Louis Stange, the development team built on the achievements not only of Rheinmetall and its subsidiaries but also of other companies such as Mauser. Adopted by the Wehrmacht in 1934, the MG 34 served as Germany's main infantry and tank machine gun until 1942. The more advanced MG 42 took over in 1942, but production of the MG 34 continued due to its greater adaptability for tank use compared to the newer model. The post-war period saw mass production of the MG 34 and widespread adoption in many countries, including the United States, Germany, GDR, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, France, Turkey, and Switzerland, where it fired NATO-standard ammunition (7.62 and 7.5 mm). Large shipments were also sent to countries such as China, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, and Israel. In addition, thousands of units were delivered to the United States, Germany, and the USSR for use in the Middle East. As a pioneering single-barreled machine gun adopted by any army, the MG 34 embodied Wehrmacht doctrine developed from World War I, representing the concept of a versatile universal machine gun. Designed for various roles – bipod light infantry support or mounted anti-aircraft fire – it could also be used as tank-killer gear when paired with separate installations on tanks and armored vehicles. This modular design simplified supply and training for troops while providing significant tactical flexibility on the battlefield.
