MFOS Noise Toaster Synthesizer Case and Panel
thingiverse
This is a case and front panel for the Music From Outer Space "Noise Toaster", featured on Make: Analog Synthesizers and at musicfromouterspace.com. This project is an absolute blast to put together and play with. The MFOS website does a better job of explaining this DIY synthesizer, but I'll quote Ray Wilson from his website: "The MFOS NOISE TOASTER squeezes more fun out of a nine volt battery than you ever thought possible". I assembled the electronics on a stripboard, but if I were to do it again, I'd get a PCB from the MFOS website and save myself hours of debugging. Ray does a great job with his web site and book, providing clear schematics and parts lists that make the project go together quickly. The front panel includes raised text and must be printed in two colors. Most slicers come with a "pause at height" plugin that moves the hot end out of the way and allows you to switch filaments. The panel is 3mm thick, and the text is 0.5mm, so add a command to pause after printing the 3mm layer. One tip: If your printer disables stepper motors after pausing, insert M84 S0 at the start of the G-Code. The case includes space for an 8 Ohm, 0.5W 1" diameter speaker and has a 9V battery compartment. I used a hot glue gun to mount the speaker. The case is held together with M3 bolts that have slots to hold the nuts on the other side. The entire case can be printed without supports, despite having bridges and small overhangs. My printer handled them just fine using 0.25mm layers and 25% infill. I've included a SketchUp file in case any modifications are needed. This design should be compatible with the MFOS PCB, so as long as you get a 1" diameter speaker, no modifications should be required.
