The Hebrew word Mizuzah literally translates as doorpost. Colloquially, it refers to the object commonly found affixed to Jewish home doors. This is our next exploration into Jewish ritual items in the Jewish Ritual Items and 3-D Design class. Standards CCSS Overview and Background The Bible commands a positive commandment to place a mezuzah on every doorpost. We learn this through sources including Rambam's Sefer HaMitzvot, Positive Commandment 15, and Sefer HaChinuch Mitzvah 423, which reference Devarim 6:9 and 11:20. Shulchan Aruch YD 285:1 states that one should be meticulous with this mitzva. Chayei Adam 5:13 says a house with a mezuzah has extra protection. Tur YD 285 writes based on the following pasuk in Parashat Ekev, 11:21, that one who is meticulous in this mitzva merits long life. Bach YD 285 and Aruch Hashulchan YD 285:3 write that a house with a mezuzah has extra protection. What does it really mean to be protected? To be under G-d's grace? Explore the verses in Deuteronomy 6:6-9, which are housed in the mezuzah.
