Metope des Zeus-Tempels in Olympia
sketchfab
The metopes of the Zeus Temple in Olympia depict the twelve deeds of Hercules. Six of them adorned the east and west sides of the temple. The Kiel Collection displays a cast of a metope from the eastern gable. It shows Hercules in the center of the image, carrying the celestial vault on his shoulder. He does this so that Atlas, shown to the right of Hercules, can retrieve the apples of his daughters, the Hesperides, for him. To the left of Hercules is his patron goddess Athena, who supports him in carrying the celestial vault with her left hand. The model for the displayed metope is made of marble and dates back to around 470-450 BC. The associated Zeus Temple is one of the most famous architectural works of ancient times.
