Meteorite cast

The Mayerthorpe Meteorite was unearthed in 1964 by M. Dmitroca while tending a field near Mayerthorpe, Alberta. This replica is part of the collection at RAM made over three decades ago from the original 8.7 kg mass now housed in the University of Alberta Meteorite Collection. The meteorite exhibits prominent "thumbprint impressions," a texture known as regmaglypts formed as its surface is eroded during atmospheric entry. This replica, along with others in the Geology Collection at RAM, are high-quality reproductions that display signs of degradation, not unexpected for the materials used. Photogrammetry captures the current state of objects in the collection that may deteriorate over time and also creates new opportunities to reinterpret objects not represented in the collections at RAM.
