Meteor Crater is a massive meteorite impact crater situated roughly 37 miles east of Flagstaff and about 18 miles west of Winslow in Arizona's northern desert region. Due to the United States Board on Geographic Names' standard practice of using post office names for natural features, this site was dubbed "Meteor Crater" from the nearby Meteor post office. Historically known as the Canyon Diablo Crater, fragments of the meteorite are officially called the Canyon Diablo Meteorite. Scientists give it the name Barringer Crater in honor of Daniel Barringer, who was the first to propose that it resulted from a meteorite impact. The crater is owned by the Barringer family through their company, which proudly claims it's the "best preserved meteorite crater on Earth."
