Metal 3-D Printer v1.0
pinshape
The Metal Delta RepRap v1 uses an upside-down Rostock-like stage to move a substrate under a MIG welder. We have shown that steel printing can be done using standard welding wire. For more details, see G.C. Anzalone, C. Zhang, B. Wijnen, P.G. Sanders and J.M. Pearce's paper "Low-Cost Open-Source 3-D Metal Printing," which is set to be published in IEEE Access. The DOI number for the preprint is 10.1109/ACCESS.2013.2293018. The build process is relatively simple by RepRap standards, and can be completed in under a day with all necessary parts on hand. The total cost, including the welder, comes out to less than $1200. This project was made possible by Michigan Tech's Open Sustainability Technology Research Group, which aims to create inexpensive open-source scientific equipment for everyone.
