Mesosaurus, meaning "middle lizard," is an extinct genus of reptile originating from the Early Permian period in southern Africa and South America - specifically during a 28 million year span from 299 to 271 million years ago. The discovery of Mesosaurus remains in southern Africa and Eastern South America provided crucial evidence for the theory of continental drift, as these two distant regions were once connected. Since Mesosaurus was primarily a coastal animal, it's unlikely that it would have crossed the Atlantic Ocean, further solidifying the notion that the continents were once joined together.
