Cookie Basics Exercise 01: Making Cookies from Scratch Making cookies from scratch is a fun and rewarding process that requires just a few basic ingredients and tools. To start, preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). This will ensure that your cookies bake evenly and come out with the perfect texture. Next, in a large bowl, whisk together 2 1/4 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tsp baking soda, and 1 tsp salt. Make sure to use high-quality ingredients for the best flavor and texture. In another bowl, cream together 1 cup of unsalted butter and 3/4 cup white granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add in 1 large egg and mix well. Slowly add in the dry ingredients (flour mixture) to the wet ingredients (butter mixture), mixing until just combined. Do not overmix, as this can result in tough cookies. Stir in any desired mix-ins such as chocolate chips or nuts. Scoop out tablespoon-sized balls of dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving about 2 inches of space between each cookie. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden brown. Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Enjoy your freshly baked cookies!
