Cretaceous sandstone collected from the Mesa Verde Group near Durango, Colorado exhibits distinctive dark red/orange layers known as Liesegang Banding. These colorful bands are created by the precipitation of iron-rich minerals directly from groundwater flowing through the deposited sediment. A dewatering structure interrupts the pattern of the bands near the top of the rock, formed when overlying sediment loads pushed fluids upward to escape.
