Human: Mermaid is a bronze sculpture created by Danish sculptor Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen, depicting a mermaid with distinctive features. The original 1921 bronze cast is showcased in the SMK's permanent collection. Carl-Nielsen's mermaid stands out from Edvard Eriksen's more famous Little Mermaid with her projecting fins, flat nose and fish-like mouth, making her appear more creature than human. In contrast to Eriksen's sculpture, Carl-Nielsen's mermaid is depicted in a dynamic pose and conveys a dramatic expression. Her terrified look in the eyes and gasping for breath suggest she has just emerged from the water with hair dripping wet. Some experts believe that Carl-Nielsen's tormented facial expression reflects her difficult marriage and husband's infidelity. John Fellow, a Carl Nielsen specialist, notes that this sculpture was the only work created during this challenging period not driven by economic necessity. Additionally, it is suggested that the mermaid symbolizes the transition from girl to woman.
