Mermaids are mythical sea creatures with the upper body of a female and the lower body of a fish. They show up in folklore from many cultures around the world, including the Near East, Europe, Africa, and Asia. The first stories about mermaids came out of ancient Assyria, where the goddess Atargatis turned herself into a mermaid because she was ashamed of accidentally killing her human boyfriend.
