In 2002, Martin Fitzpatrick made an incredible discovery at Merlin Castle - survey to repeated for more detail on May 16, 2017. A unique sheela-na-gig figure was found carved into the spandrel of a single-light ogee-headed window on the second floor of the S wall. According to Freitag's research, this remarkable carving is unusual because it depicts a seated figure upside down beneath a decorative motif. In the opposite corner, a six-petal marigold adds an extra layer of detail to this intricate design. The round head and facial features are clearly visible, while breasts are indicated. Both arms stretch straight out in front of the body, with hands joined together as if touching a long vertical slit that suggests a vulva.
