Merchant Navy Seaman, Second World War memorial

This is one of two figurative sculptures marking the entrance to a 'sunken garden', honoring 24,000 identified lives lost at sea during World War II (32,000 total losses). Each pylon represents a Merchant Navy soldier on the east side and an officer on the west. The sunken garden's walls are eight feet high in Portland stone, matching the original memorial, with 132 bronze panels listing missing names from World War II fixed to the walls. These name panels encircle the entire sunken garden, lining both northern and southern walls, as well as eastern and western walls. Between the two statues is a large plaque noting the war years (1939-1945) and carrying the memorial's dedication: Twenty-four thousand Merchant Navy and fishing fleet lives honored on these garden walls gave their country their all, no grave but the sea claiming them.
