The Mercedes-AMG, a performance and motorsports division of Mercedes-Benz, produced the sports car and race vehicle known as the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR (W297). Initially crafted for the new FIA GT Championship series in 1997, the road-going cars were secondary to the racing model. Consequently, the limited production road vehicles are considered street legal race cars. Successful in its first year, the CLK GTR underwent upgrades in 1998 as a contender in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and was renamed the CLK LM. The project concluded in 1999 with the introduction of the Mercedes-Benz CLR Le Mans prototype, succeeding both the CLK LMs and CLK GTR road cars.
