The legendary Mercedes-Benz W196 was a dominant force on the Formula One circuit during its time. Born from the innovative spirit of its predecessors, this car revolutionized racing technology with groundbreaking features like desmodromic valves and mechanical direct fuel injection. Adapted from the mighty DB 601 high-performance V12 engine used in the iconic Messerschmitt Bf 109E fighter aircraft during World War II, Daimler-Benz successfully harnessed its power to take the Mercedes-Benz W196 to unprecedented heights. Under the skillful hands of legendary drivers Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss, the car conquered a remarkable 9 out of 12 races, securing both world championships in which it participated. The car's most storied cousin, the legendary 3-liter 300 SLR, made its debut in the 1955 World Sportscar Championship season. Heralded as a marvel of engineering with the same spirit as the W196, it set an astonishing pace but ultimately met its untimely demise at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The subsequent pullout from competitive racing marked the end of Mercedes-Benz's W196 chapter, and though they would return decades later, that event still casts a lasting shadow on motorsports history.
