The engineers behind the Mercedes-Benz ML450 Hybrid were resolute from the outset: a hybrid SUV from Mercedes-Benz would have to embody the brand's signature qualities in every way. Key attributes such as unparalleled active and passive safety features, sublime ride comfort, and intuitive operation had to be on par with those of any conventionally powered standard-production vehicle. Moreover, uncompromising reliability over an extended period and exceptional workmanship using premium materials were non-negotiable. And all this would have to be achieved while prioritizing the utmost efficiency. At the same time, the drive system had to showcase the company's pioneering spirit and cutting-edge technology. Meeting these objectives necessitated a comprehensive development process – the kind undertaken for any new model family created from scratch. Throughout its journey towards series-production maturity, the Mercedes-Benz ML450 Hybrid underwent an arduous testing regimen, with engineers and technicians racking up a staggering four million kilometres of real-world driving experience in some of the world's most inhospitable climates. From the icy grip of the Arctic Circle to the scorching heat of arid desert regions and the sweltering humidity of the tropics, the system was put through its paces to prove its reliability. Supplementing this extensive on-road testing programme were an array of simulations and test-rig evaluations within the 'Digital Prototype' framework. A key focus during development was ensuring seamless integration between the various powertrain subsystems, allowing drivers to effortlessly switch between different drive modes while behind the wheel.
