Mercedes-Benz Logo Hood Ornament (Two Part)
thingiverse
I designed this Mercedes hood ornament clone to surpass existing versions on Thingiverse, but still room for improvement exists. It's actually one of my earliest models, so don't anticipate perfection just yet. The quest was on to find a good 3D printable model without supports that looked like the real thing, and I eventually settled on something that met these demands. Given the narrow tolerances involved, some sanding may be required to achieve seamless fitting parts together without the aid of glue, but it's definitely possible. In reality, this model was super easy to make - it took just five minutes in total! Once you have your two separate pieces printed out, you can either attach them straight away and leave them unpainted or take it a step further by adding a coat of silver paint for that authentic finish. Alternatively, find detailed instructions on how I achieved this creation in another part of my section. Print Settings Rafts: Yes Resolution: 0.2 mm Infill: 30% Notes: This was printed using silver ABS material and with a heated bed at 90C using Da Vinci 1.0A. Any print attempt made below the temperature threshold may be affected by warping issues. Sliced up for printing with the help of slic3r and g-code hosted on repetier-host. Post-Printing I employed sandpaper to delicately smooth out inside base's hole after print completion, leaving behind a silky finish that can either withstand its original look or even benefit from an ABS-acetone polish. It would be another great option as well, just like spray painting the model silver in final steps! How I Made This Design The whole concept is versatile enough to convert nearly any .png image into actual physical reality! It started with cropping down an actual picture of Mercedes logo via Google, removing background to reveal clear transparency via preview and conversion to a usable SVG on Mac, before sending the whole process in for completion using Tinkercad. Once merged together as 2 parts I imported it over R-H software that allows to combine models for one successful print run on Da Vinci printer which printed smoothly even after light sanding required from previous owners that struggled achieving similar quality.
