Very impressive model. The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, chassis code W 198, was manufactured from 1954 to 1963. First introduced as a Coupe in 1954, the gullwing doors became an iconic feature. Production switched to Roadster form in 1957, remaining this way until 1963. This direct fuel injected model was directly based on the less powerful W194 straight-6 engine racer from 1952. Mercedes-Benz unveiled the 300 SL at the International Motor Sports Show in New York in February 1954. Max Hoffman was largely responsible for introducing this model to the market. In a poll, car enthusiasts voted it the sports car of the century in 1999. The "300" engine size refers to its engine displacement, measuring 3,000 centilitres or more specifically 2,996 cc (182.8 cu in). "SL" is an acronym for "super-light", reflecting the tubular frame's lightweight design.
