The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL (chassis code W 198) is produced as a two-seat sports car, boasting a gullwinged coupe design from 1954-1957 and a roadster version from 1957-1963. Built on the successful 1952 racer, the W194, with direct fuel-injection technology that significantly boosts power by nearly 50% in its 3-litre overhead camshaft straight-6 engine, this car can reach speeds of up to 263 km/h (163 mph), earning it both sports car racing champion and fastest production car of its time. The 300 SL is conceived by Max Hoffman, Mercedes-Benz's authorized United States importer at the time, who perceives a substantial American market for such a vehicle. As a result, the company launches the 300 SL in February 1954 at the International Motor Sports Show in New York, rather than introducing it first in Europe to quickly get it into U.S. buyers' hands.
