The hanukkiah or menorah, often called hanukkah candlestick (hebrew: ḥanukkiyah), is a unique candelabrum with nine branches that illuminates the eight-day festival of hanukkah. In contrast to the seven-branched menorah used in ancient temples as a symbol. Each evening during hanukkah, an additional branch is lit, while the ninth candle holder, called shamash (helper or assistant), provides light for all other candles or serves as an extra light source. For hanukkiah to be kosher, the shamash must be positioned on a higher plane than the main eight candles or oil lamps. However, opinions differ on whether the lights should be arranged in a straight line or if the channukiah can be designed in a curved shape.
