Menger sponge with external support

Menger sponge with external support

thingiverse

The Menger sponge's complex geometry makes it challenging for standard filament-based 3D printers due to its numerous overhangs. However, the diagonal shape prints well, leading some to suggest gluing halves together. This seems like cheating, so an alternative solution was sought. By using external support as part of the model, the Menger sponge can be printed successfully. The design includes a hollow cone at the bottom that supports the print during the process and can later serve as a display stand. After printing, minor cleanup with a knife may be required. It is also important to note that some software might require STL file fixing, like OpenSCAD-rendered models. Additionally, Slic3r's default solid infill setting could cause overfilling at the very tip of the cube, which can be easily cleaned up but should be tested with a lower setting for better results.
