Menger sponge revisited
thingiverse
Menger cubes, also known as Menger sponges, are fascinating objects that become increasingly complex with each level. To observe their cross-section, cut them in half perpendicular to a body diagonal. After compiling the C program (using gcc -Wall -O2 menger.c -o menger), run it to generate SCAD files for four levels of Menger sponges: menger 0 > m0.scad, menger 1 > m1.scad, menger 2 > m2.scad, and menger 3 > m3.scad. The attached "hm2.scad" creates half a Menger cube for printing on an Ultimaker with two layers of outer wall and no infill to avoid wire-mess. Print two copies, fit them together, and display on your coffee table as a conversation starter about slicing patterns. A similar Menger sponge can be found on Thingiverse (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:8759), inspired by George Hart (http://www.georgehart.com/).
