Menander

This portrait of a man is a Roman replica from a Greek sculpture dating back to the late 4th century BC. It is currently on display at the Museum für Abgüsse Klassischer Bildwerke in Munich, Germany. Menander (/məˈnændər/; Greek: Μένανδρος, Menandros; circa 342-341 - circa 290 BC) was a Greek playwright and the most renowned representative of Athenian New Comedy. He authored 108 comedies and won first prize at the Lenaia festival eight times. His record at the City Dionysia is unknown but may have been similarly impressive. As one of the most popular writers of ancient Greece, his work was lost during the Middle Ages and is now known in modern times in highly fragmented form, much of which was discovered in the 20th century. Only one play, Dyskolos, has survived almost entirely intact. This object is part of "Scan The World".
