Children of John and Grace Memstock are laid to rest in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Located on La Crosse Street in La Crosse, WI, this family's grave monument stands as a testament to their legacy. The names and dates etched onto the stone tell a heartbreaking story. Edwin John, the eldest child, passed away on September 29, 1870, at the tender age of 12 years. His loss was followed closely by that of his younger sister Ella Lillian, who succumbed to illness on October 12, 1870, just shy of her sixth birthday and five months into her fifth year. Tragedy struck again when Fred W, their older brother, died suddenly on May 1, 1874, leaving behind a family forever changed by his loss. Edwin Hart, the youngest sibling, met an untimely end just two years prior to Fred's passing, perishing at a mere five months of age. These heart-wrenching losses were documented on September 6, 2019, and captured through the lens of an iPhone 5s in sixty-one poignant photographs. Kim Thompson, a dedicated member of the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, meticulously chronicled this family's story for posterity.
