Memorial to Robert Hunter of Lunna

17th century memorial stone in Lunna kirk, Shetland Isles, Scotland. Rest here the bones and dust of Robert Hunter of Luna and Margaret Leslie his spouse - he was born in 15__ died in 16__. His eldest son William Hunter of Luna Lunna or Lynna survived him __ years was also buried here. The lettering is in three different styles and the years have not been fully filled in. The original carved area of the stone was commissioned and completed sometime before death, with further text carved when there was a suitably skilled person in the area - then year details could be filled in after death either inscribed into the stone or painted on. I found no record of when Robert Hunter was born. Robert built nearby Lunna House around 1663, he married Margaret Leslie in 1678, they had eleven children before Robert died c.1693-5.
