This statue honors a celebrated writer named Samuel Johnson, more commonly known as Dr. Johnson, who left an indelible mark on English literature through his work as a poet, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. Devout in his Anglican faith, he was also a kind philanthropist. Politically, Dr. Johnson identified strongly with the Tory party. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography regards him as "perhaps the most accomplished writer in all of English history." Additionally, James Boswell's book about Samuel Johnson, known as The Life of Samuel Johnson, is widely regarded by scholars like Walter Jackson Bate as "the single greatest work of biographical art ever written."
