Megatherium americanum was one of America's largest land dwellers, a closely related group of animals that once roamed freely across the Americas, especially South America. Its scientific name means 'a massive creature from North America.' There were many different kinds of ground sloths but now they're all gone. They were a widespread and highly successful group of mammals - their fossils have been discovered in Patagonia to Alaska.
